Dialogue Line[edit]

I got the line 'Ah, my favourite customer. What have you got?' when I was 3rd level, had only about 200 gold and was only apprentice Mercantile. Can somebody else confirm the line appears before the stated time? Rpeh 12:37, 2 June 2007 (EDT)

He will always say that line when you initiate his Barter Service and his disposition towards you is greater than 60.00
--Timenn 12:58, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
Okay. You've got the info so I'll leave you to make the change if that's alright? Rpeh 13:04, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
The info came straight from the Construction Set. I also changed the content of the quote to match the caption given at this line of dialogue. --Timenn 13:46, 2 June 2007 (EDT)

Getting Killed[edit]

I've not seen Olav get killed in the way described. He frequently goes into sneak mode and tries to pick people's pockets but all that I've seen happen then is for everyone to start shouting, a guard to rush in with sword unsheathed... then for everyone to calm down again and the guard to sheath his sword and walk out. Vaguely amusing but not a bloodbath. Has anybody else have him get killed? --RpehTalk 05:24, 10 August 2007 (EDT)

I've seen that too, everybody just seems to lose interest by the time the guard arrives. But I've also seen him essential (may be due to the Unofficial Patch). I did however once see Olfand get slaughtered by guards in there, though not Ongar. - Emerald Melios 01:29, 16 August 2007 (EDT)
He's essential until after the Thieves Guild quest line is completed but I've still never seen him killed. It's been nearly a week so I'm going to take that information off as being unproven. If anybody can verify it, they can re-add it. --RpehTalk 04:57, 16 August 2007 (EDT)
When I play, the guard sometimes comes in with sword drawn and knocks Ongar unconscious, almost killing him. Also, one time, after getting caught picking someone's pocket, Ongar drew his sword and killed Suurootan with a single slash. — Unsigned comment by 71.107.141.171 (talk) on 16 June 2009
Well, NPC"s have the option of paying the fine when they get caught, and sicne he is a shopkeeper, he can useually pay for anything he manages to filch 184.77.194.254 21:57, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

() NPC's cannot pay a fine...--Corevette789 22:04, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

In my case, they have, so long as they have the money for it, which they often dont, which then causes the "resist Arrest DIE" Behavior of the guards, In my experience. 184.77.194.254 22:13, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Pickpocket Bug[edit]

Strangely, whenever he pickpockets on my game, it freezes and wont come back. Any ideas? — Unsigned comment by 70.244.48.201 (talk) on 15 September 2007

On mine it wont let u barter wit him????

how am i ment 2 join???

den sometimes he starts runnin from me n wen i try 2 talk 2 him it just says he is fleein.....

wat dat about???? — Unsigned comment by 90.202.18.227 (talk) on 3 January 2008

If he's fleeing he's scared of something - quite possibly you. Have you been killing people in sight of him for instance? You can't barter with him unless you've already joined the Thieves Guild. As soon as you've joined he'll let you barter with him. See the Thieves Guild article for more details. Lastly, please take the time to type your questions properly - this isn't a mobile phone. —RpehTCE 07:24, 3 January 2008 (EST)
I tried what you advised to the other guy. It didn't work even tough I am part of the theives guild. I need to trade or else I cant get any missions in the theives guild! — Unsigned comment by 71.191.186.17 (talk) on 10 March 2009
i have the same problem, while doing darkbrotherwod quest line i killed someone in front of ongar, now that i joined the thieves guild he is terrified by my presence and i cant talk to him..anyone has a work around?tnks — Unsigned comment by 193.126.48.94 (talk) on 2 December 2009

Ok, how you go about fixing this is by; First hit Ongar with a low damage spell of something, just dont knock him out! Next make sure the gaurds catch you, pay the fine then go back to him, you should now be able to talk to him. For the next step your need about 2000 gold, or a high speechcraft skill. But raise his disposition of you to above 75, Next go and pay the blood price for attacking another member of the Thieves Guild. (500 Gold) then travel back to bruma, and you should be able to barter with Ongar.

His Chest[edit]

Someone just added a few words about his chest. I checked it out. It's actually underground, I could only reach it with the "tcl" command, I unlocked it and it contained the things I sold him recently. Villy 01:11, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Great work! Is the only possible way to get to it is by using "tcl"? That seems kind of weird. And what exactly do you mean by underground? --Elliot talk 01:24, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
I removed the edit. All vendors have at least one such chest. Some have two, one for respawning/random items and one for fixed stuff. Some have even more for various reasons. They are all hidden out of site underground and only accessible using tcl except for Fathis Ules' chest in the Elven Gardens District. –rpehTCE 10:33, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Interesting... must be the way the game interacts with vendors, instead of having a predetermied list they need a chest somewhere with all their items RandomTime 10:36, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Fenced Amount Bug[edit]

When fencing some gear at Ongar's, the "Amount fenced" counter locked at 11 gold (this was after bartering over 200 gold of stolen gear). Anybody else noticed this bug? (Xbox version, current update) 90.211.162.163 22:55, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Were the items you were selling FOR SURE stolen?--Corevette789 01:54, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Yes, every item was stolen, had the little red hand marker. 90.211.162.163 13:11, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Barter Problem[edit]

Ongar talks to me and tells me he's a fence but I can't barter with him, is there a possible fix? — Unsigned comment by 83.227.59.138 (talk) on 24 April 2010

He should be available 24 hours per day. Are you sure you're a member of the Thieves Guild? rpeh •TCE 12:33, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Ongar Barter Problem[edit]

I need to barter with Ongar in order to complete the "Independant Thievery" quest but it wont let me. I talk to him but there is no barter option. I even ask him about fences and he says he is one and he also says show me watchya got. I AM in the thieve's guild and should beable to barter with him. I even bribed him in the persuade option. Please help! 142.162.139.134 01:46, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

To barter with Ongar, you must go to Olav's Tap and Tack, (an inn in bruma) and talk to him between 8:00pm and 8:00am and THEN the barter option will be there. (Assuming you joined the thieves guild) 142.162.139.134 02:05, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Ongar will barter with you at any time as long as he is not outside (so if he is in his house or in Olav's Tap and Tack. This is mentioned in the article. Vesna 02:10, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Ongar Doesn't like vampires.[edit]

How can i talk to him when he doesnt like me because im a vampire? — Unsigned comment by 184.0.231.110 (talk) on 1 May 2011

Raise his disposition to 100 with a charm spell. --S'drassa You have words? 22:39, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Maybe the Gray Cowl will conceal your vampiric identity and let you deal with Thieves Guild members? I don't know, just a shot in the dark. Minor Edits 22:44, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Not Home[edit]

When I want to see ongar he is not home, only sometimes. why is this? — Unsigned comment by 174.1.3.214 (talk) at 01:04 on 22 December 2012

The answer is right there on the article. --Krusty (talk) 23:19, 24 December 2012 (GMT)

Possible Audio glitch?[edit]

Just now, I went to Ongar at Olav's Tap & Tack - I'm a Shadowfoot, if it matters - and fenced an item. When exiting out, he said "I'm glad that's over. I need a nap.", but after nap, there was a brief pause, and some mumbling noise or something. Some sort of dialogue not covered by the subtitles.

Can someone listen to it, and confirm what he's saying? Is it a voice actor mistake, or something? --The Hero of Kvatch (talk) 00:11, 15 June 2013 (GMT)

A little late here, but it seems to be yawning followed by some mumbling, but it sounds like it's intended, especially since he constantly implies he's really tired. I don't think it's an audio mistake. --Dremora Lord (talk) 19:53, 21 November 2013 (GMT)

Barter Problem[edit]

Ongar the Fence will not buy anything that I attempt to sell to him. When I try, he says "I can't make that deal, even for you!" On every product I attempt to sell. Please help. — Unsigned comment by 173.48.159.124 (talk) at 12:44 on 24 July 2013

Sounds like you're either a) trying to sell at a price higher than he accepts or b)try to sell for more gold than he has available. Try decreasing the barter factor or (if it is already at lowest) increaste his disposition towards you. If you're trying to sell a stack of items for more gold than he has available, he'll respond the same so simply decrease the stack. -- SarthesArai Talk 12:54, 24 July 2013 (GMT)

Possibly Gay Character[edit]

I think Ongar is gay. His comments about "nord fellowship" in the context of speaking about the pleasures of Bruma, are well, suspicious. (talk) 22:27, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

I don't find that suspicious at all. The Nords live in and around Bruma. They're fun at parties. His people typically enjoy drinking and being jovial. If there were more dialogue to support that supposed subtext, I would agree with you, but as it is, that's not enough to assume his sexuality. He could be gay, could not be, but we don't know. A single line of dialogue about Nords being fun people to hang out with isn't evidence enough to tell either way. -MolagBallet (talk) 03:02, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
