Unpickable Chest[edit]

There's an unpickable locked box behind Fathis Ules' house. Anyone know where the key is? — Unsigned comment by 149.135.89.241 (talk) at 21:48 on 5 December 2006‎

Assuming you mean the chest identified as "Fathis Ules Chest", it does not have a key (even though the lock says that a key is needed to open it). In other words, there is no way to get into this chest. If you want access to the contents, you need to buy them from Fathis Ules. --Nephele 23:22, 5 December 2006 (EST)
Happens alot with Thieves Guild fences. Luciana Galena (if I spelt that correctly) has an unpickable chest too. It's a sad world for thieves...--Hicky 05:15, 24 February 2007 (EST)
There is a key - Fathis Ules carries it on him and you can pickpocket it off him if you're sneak and security skill are high enough 212.248.219.126 09:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
No there isn't. That key is for his house's door, not the chest. –rpehTCE 09:14, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Using console commands to unlock it merely shows the Fence's stock. — Unsigned comment by Daedric Crayons (talkcontribs) at 03:42 on 21 December 2009

Sewer Access[edit]

You can access the sewers through Fathis Ules' basement. — Unsigned comment by Jadrax (talkcontribs) at 16:41 on 13 January 2007

Service Times[edit]

I've found that he will only deal with me while he is sitting on his chest - at other times, the trade icon is not present (xbox) - is this generally the case? If so, the 24 hrs availability should be changed, it seems. — Unsigned comment by 82.2.63.65 (talk) at 22:16 on 23 April 2007

I'm also having a problem with Fathis Ules. I'm playing thru for the 4th time and this is the first game I've tried to use him as a fence. Now that I can use him as a fence, he never has the barter icon available in my game. I have not yet completed the 'Sins of the Father' quest and I've followed him all over Imperial City at all times of the day trying to barter with him. I'll live, but it's worth mentioning that I'm on the xbox as well. ButrBiscut 02:39, 26 May 2007 (EDT)
I know for me on the PC it took a while for the quest to update saying I could use him as a fence, then it worked.— Unsigned comment by 204.191.238.10 (talk) at 02:03 on 27 May 2007
There seem to be a couple extra twists with NPC service times that I'm still trying to completely understand. One issue seems to be that whenever a NPC is moving from one place to another they generally won't offer services, even if they offer services both at the place they are leaving from and the place they are going to. I'm guessing that may be the problem players are encountering with Fathis.
On the other hand, I can confirm on Xbox that I've been able to get him to barter (both buy and sell) when he was in the Arboretum, the Tiber Septim Hotel, the King and Queen Tavern, and the Market District, in addition to when he is at his chest. So he definitely does not only offer services when he is at his vendor chest. I've provided details on when and where he can be found to hopefully make it easier to barter with him. --NepheleTalk 21:51, 27 May 2007 (EDT)

() on uesp it says that he is on his chest from 7pm-5am but he is never there!!!! and i dont have them quests active. please help — Unsigned comment by Meanodeano2 (talkcontribs) at 18:14 on 24 July 2007

Have you completed the Sins of the Father quest? If you have, Fathis stays in Chorrol and won't return to the Imperial City. The quest doesn't have to be active for this to happen. If you're on the PC version you can install the fix given, if not you'll just have to use the other fences. --RpehTalk 04:43, 25 July 2007 (EDT)
You might want to check Dul gro-shug's house. Sometime I find him stuck in front of the private quarters' door. Talking to him fixes the problem on my PS3. If this happens a lot you may want to steal Dul gro-shug's key to make accessing his house easier 194.154.66.220 12:31, 11 July 2008 (EDT)

Dareloths House[edit]

After completing the Thieves guild questline i have recently found Fathis Ules in Dareloths House next to Armand Christophe this was at 11.25 on Fredas. This was also for the 360, also i have had trouble finding him on his chest so i was wondering if someone could check if after the thieves guild questline has finished that this is where he shows up instead of His Chest. — Unsigned comment by Platypodge (talkcontribs) at 08:14 on 13 November 2007

Stealing[edit]

Anyone else notice him stealing wine when he goes to eat lunch? lol Wanna add that to the page as a note or something? --75.80.18.8 01:15, 29 January 2008 (EST)

its not really notable to tell you the truth, alot of the NPCs will steal food, its if their responsiblity is below 30 they will steal/buy stolen items--65.87.55.174 23:12, 10 February 2008 (EST)

Clubhouse Bug[edit]

On Xbox360 version with the Shivering Isles pack I can use Fathis as a fence everywhere except in the Thieves Guild "clubhouse". He'll tell me he's the best in the biz but the option to buy/sell never shows there. He's not quite the 24/7 fence for me. Is this a bug? — Unsigned comment by 72.14.204.136 (talk) at 16:43 on 24 March 2008

Sins of the Father[edit]

Is there any way to use him as a fence after completing the Sins of the Father quest on an Xbox 360? I'm playing on a live profile so I suppose I have any patch available. I have received both Sins of the Father and Arrow of Extrication quests, but I haven't started either of them. — Unsigned comment by 84.217.112.221 (talk) at 22:09 on 25 March 2008

Can't find him anywhere[edit]

Okay, I've been looking for him to use as a fence for a while now. I've finished the Thieves Guild questline, and I've used him as a fence before. I have tried going everywhere that this page says that he is during the times that he is, and he isn't there. I haven't started Sins of a Father or whatever the quests name is, so that's not the problem either. Any ideas on where I could find him? Harrison 23:19, 19 April 2008 (EDT)

Nevermind, I found him. He was stuck in the Orcs bedroom. Harrison 23:27, 19 April 2008 (EDT)
I have the same problem, tell me the name of the orc plz. --Ptowery 21:35, 9 November 2008 (EST)
This man is a phantom. I have completed the guild's quest line and I have not been able to finish the quest preceding Sins of the Father. I have not seen Fathis in over an in-game year. Should anyone happen to pass this in the Recent Changes, I would really like to know where else he could get stuck according to this schedule. -Mudcrabs-More-Fearsome-Than-You Talk 20:20, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
As a matter of fact, we are researching Fathis Ules right now - mostly to figure out what is wrong with him. I have a suggestion for you; try going to Dul gro-Shug's house in the evening (after 7pm) and unlock the door. Fathis might come walking down the stairs if you do. If not, try unlocking the bedroom door in the same house - it is possible that he is stuck in there. Good luck and let me know if you find him. --Krusty 20:41, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Great news. I ran into Fathis in the Market District and I have been following him for days. I will post a log of his schedule soon, since it differs greatly from the one in the article. Mudcrabs-More-Fearsome-Than-You Talk 12:46, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
Meh. I'll do it sometime this weekend. Mudcrabs-More-Fearsome-Than-You Talk 14:25, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Sitting[edit]

How does he sit on his chest when it is not a chair? (Helper Unknown)99.237.166.44 19:01, 1 August 2008 (EDT)

It turns out that question has a rather interesting answer. In fact, he's not really sitting on his chest but on a stool (TGFathisChairRef of type LCStool01F) that's embedded in it. The stool is exactly the same height as the chest so it looks like the chest is the seat. –RpehTCE 06:12, 2 August 2008 (EDT)

Bartering[edit]

At approximately 12:02 pm, I was able to barter with Fathis Ules. I followed him to the "King and Queens Tavern". This seems to be the only place he will barter with me. - Guy Patterson — Unsigned comment by 173.17.113.73 (talk) at 21:06 on 25 May 2009

See the Bugs section...I suspect the first one is the problem here. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 17:59, 1 June 2009 (EDT)

Can't use him as a fence![edit]

I have completed the quest Sins of the Father, and now I was going to complete the Thieves Guild questline, but it comes out that there is that bug which is written in the website... So I tried using the unofficial patch, but when I try to talk to him, the game unexpectedly closes... Is there something I can do? -- Alija — Unsigned comment by 151.65.16.33 (talk) at 17:01 on 10 September 2009

You would probably have to go back to a slightly earlier save. —Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 02:49, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

Master of Mercantile? What?[edit]

On his page, he is listed as the master of the mercantile skill. I was under the impression that Palonirya was the master, but when I look at her page, it lists her as expert. Is this a mistake or am I going crazy? Filia 21:05, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

You're both correct and incorrect. Palonirya provides master level Mercantile training, but only has a mercantile leevel of 80 (Expert). Fathis Ules has a skill level of 100 (Master), but doesn't offer training in the skill. It's kind of confusing, but that's how the game is set up. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 21:16, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Deleted Nonsense[edit]

I just deleted this paragraph from the article:

After completing The Ultimate Heist it is possible that he will only barter with you at The Tiber Septim Hotel in the Talos Plaza District from 5pm-7pm. He will have unlimited gold and may accept even the hardest haggle even if your character has insufficient mercantile skill. This is because while he is not scripted to be able to barter inside the Hotel, the game assumes him as "dormant - not traveling" (this happens upon loading the Hotel and its occupants', it is unknown why his script for bartering and dormancy are run at the same time upon loading) and therefore provides his services inside while he is not moving (in conversation, eating). The game determines "items sold/bought" and "gold gained/lost" differently, and only the gold gained and items gained/lost will be credited.

My reason is: It's absolute rubbish. First, all merchants have unlimited gold. Second, you can sometimes get the "hardest haggle" even without 100 mercantile. Third, he is scripted to offer services while in the Tiber Septim. Fourth, there's no such state as "dormant - not traveling". Fifth... well the rest of it is rubbish too. I don't even know what the last sentence means. rpeh •TCE 16:01, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

His new page - opinion needed![edit]

I just added a complete revamp of this complicated and bugged NPC for the ONPCRP. I also made a quick decision in the process and left out all his quest-specific dialogue. As I'm not sure if this is the correct thing to do, I would like some opinions about it. I left it out because he is really complicated, the bugs section is as big as a house and because we might be a bit careful this time around, filling the page with too much info. Still, if the quest related dialogue should go on the page, I'd suggest that it gets its own section underneath the bugs section. This is new thinking, but he is so bugged that it would be a bit pointless to push the bugs section too much down the page. So; what do you guys/gals think? Leave out the quest dialogue or making a separate section? Or something else?

Here is the dialogue - and it is a mouthful:

Quest Dialogue
  • (When seeking you out himself or approached after two days) "I may have a bit of a proposition for you involving the Jemane family you so recently assisted."
  • (Subject: Jemane Brothers) "It was kind of you to escort the Jemanes back to Weatherleah. However, the original owner of Weatherleah left them an even greater legacy. In fact, there’s quite a bit more to their family history than meets the eye. Want to hear about it?"
  • (Answer: No) "Suit yourself. I thought you might have an interest in self-improvemnet, but perhaps not. Let me know if you ever change your mind.” and ”You shouldn’t pass on golden opportunities."
  • (When approached again after ”no”) "You have decided you have time to listen to my tale after all? It is a good one. I promise, you won’t be disappointed."
  • (I’ll listen) "Excellent. Curiosity should never be denied, is it not so? And who knows, mystory may prove profitable to both of us once it has come to its end. My tale actually begins with the father, Albert Jermane. He was once my employ, or should I say the employ of my organization. He was very good at obtaining things from people who did not want to part with. A professional thief, to put it bluntly. He was assigned to obtain a very valuable item for me. He succeeded, but decided to keep this item for himself. An unfortunate decision. He fled from Chorrol with his family, and was never heard from again. Only his small son Reynald was found, wandering alone in the wilderness. Naturally, my associates and I believed he had perished. The wilderness is, after all, a dangerous place. No place to take your family. Then, these many years later, voila! The brother reappears. It seems the rest of the family did not die in the wilderness after all."
  • (What do you want me to do?) "Indeed. What is the point of my tale? Albert Jemane builds Weatherleah way out in the middle of nowhere. He was a thief, not a farmer. The only reason to establish such a place would be to stay out of the Chorrol Guard’s sight. I believe that the item Albert stole, which rightly belongs to me, was hidden at the Weatherleah settlement. Unfortunately, the notorious Redguard Valley Ogres ransacked the place and probably took all of the loot back with them. If you were to obtain this item, somehow, and bring it to me, I would payyou very well for it. Ican get you started by telling you where the Ogres live. The rest is up to you."
  • (Topic: Albert Jemane) "There isn’t much to tell you about Albert Jemane. He was one of my best, then he got greedy. The rest is history."
  • (Topic: Jemane Family) "Guilbert and Reynald know nothing of their father’s past deeds. If you want to tell them about it, suit yourself."
  • (Topic: Stolen item) "I do not care to describe it. You will know it when you see it, I think. It is not something one of the ogres should have in his possession."
  • (When finishing convo) "Beware. The Redguard Valley Ogres are not known for their... hospitality."
  • (when approached again) "Look, I told you everything you need to know. Go to the cave, kill the ogres, get a reward. How hard is that?"
  • (when you return the Sword) "So... what have you brought me?"
  • (Stolen item) "You have it? Let me see it!"
  • (No) "Then why do you waste my time? Begone. I have no more patience for you today."
  • (Hand over the sword) "Yes, yes! This is indeed the Honorblade of Chorrol, finally delivered back to us after all these years! So this tale has a happy ending after all, at least for you. Money cannot buy happiness, they say, but we know better."
  • (End of convo) "Our transaction is complete. I trust you'll keep this between us, yes?"
  • (If you deliver sword to the Castle) "You’ve made your choice... now leave me be."
--Krusty 13:17, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
I'd be tempted to put the "I'll listen" and "What do you want me to do?" bits on the quest page rather than here and bin the rest. As you say - it's a bit long. rpeh •TCE 15:36, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Exactly. There's not even that much dialogue that explains Fathis' character or personality. It tells the interesting background story of Weatherleah and we might wanna use that somewhere else - like you say, maybe on the quest page. I'll bin it for now and add the Dialogue Written tag to his page. --Krusty 15:43, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
I agree with rpeh, and as you say Krusty, most of it isn't much to do with Fathis himself. Oh, and I'd keep the final three too. --SerCenKing Talk 16:06, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Can't use Fathis Ules as a fence[edit]

I'v completed all the theves quests but when i talk to Fathis he says "Ah, yes a guild brother in search of a fence." but there are no options to buy|sell. what do I do? — Unsigned comment by 99.141.213.31 (talk) at 17:51 on 29 July 2010

Have you completed Sins of the Father? If so, you won't be able to barter with him. Other than that, check his schedule to see what times he offers his services. -- Jplatinum16 17:09, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

He hates me[edit]

i can't use him as a fence, every time i talk to him he says: "you've made you're choice, now leave me be!" i have it on xbox 360 so console commands don't exist. HELP!!!!!!!!! — Unsigned comment by 71.2.73.207 (talk) at 05:14 on 20 October 2010

The article describe this problem in-depth - and you really have a problem. Oh, and the topic right above this one covers it too. --Krusty 06:54, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

sad sad 360 platinum best seller game[edit]

I completed the "Legacy Lost" first, second i completed the "sins of the father". after which, I then kept the sword for about 2months in the game. I was able to sell it to Fathis, and in the same conversation buy the sword back from him and sell a few other items as well. after leaving the conversation all he will say now is "Our Bussiness is done".... then later i completed the ultimate Heist and he still says Our Bussiness is done. " (so i saved the game and tried to kill him to make myself feel better lol) I also wanted to point out the after having the sword back it still weighs nothing and i can not remove it from my inventory or give back to the castle!

I didn't see a mention to newer 360 version so blah my opion ;( 98.125.100.233 18:43, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

Is there any way i can fix this??? — Unsigned comment by 120.17.96.10 (talk) at 04:02 on February 19, 2011

The article related to this talk page. Check out the NPC Summary box for service details - and the bugs section as well; maybe you can find the answer there. --Krusty 10:47, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Found a place for Fathis to sell![edit]

If you cannot get him to barter with you at the place he sleeps at. Wait for him to leave and follow him to the King and Queen Tavern. There I finally got him to barter. — Unsigned comment by 75.81.196.151 (talk) at 20:12 on 23 March 2011

Its true when I followed him to the pub he started selling? Maybe it was too bait outside :Lx — Unsigned comment by 86.178.139.224 (talk) at 13:09 on 24 August 2011
The info is already on the article. None of the official Fences will barter when they are moving from one place to another. --Krusty 14:13, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Fathis Ules won't barter[edit]

I finished Sins of the Father quest and Fathis Ules will not barter with me. I read he will now just stay in Chorrol for the rest of the game. I installed the latest patch(xbox) and :apparently it did not fix the problem. Is there anything else I can do or am I just screwed? Bparagon2387 (talk) 00:40, 16 May 2014 (GMT)

From the Bugs section of the page: "Whichever option you choose to finish Sins of the Father, once the quest is completed you will be unable to barter with Fathis." This can only be solved with the Unofficial Oblivion Patch which is, unfortunately, only available for PC. So sadly you won't be able to barter with him, sorry. •WoahBro►talk 00:58, 16 May 2014 (GMT)

Fathis Ules ignores me.[edit]

It is impossible for me to talk to Fathis Ules. I can't barter or do anything else concerning him. He just sits in the bar doing nothing. From reading the bug section, I can conclude that this is because I did "Sins of the Father" first. All Fathis Ules with say is: "Our business is done" or "There is nothing else to say". Also, I sold the Draconian Madstone (worth near 1100 gold) so all the Independent Thievery quests would instantly finish, but I don't know if that is the problem/bug.

My current IT quest says: "I've reached my goal. I have fenced over 800 gold worth of goods when I'm in the cities, I'll have to keep an eye out for another messenger from the Gray Fox. He could call for me at any time. I should wait in the Imperial City if I want them to find me quickly."

I have waited for one in-game week near the waterfront, but nobody has shown up to talk to me and a quest marker is on Fathis Ules for some reason. (Fathis is in the Oak and Crosier and never leaves the bar-stool.) 100.0.81.23 17:45, 20 June 2014 (GMT)

Forcing Conversation with Fathis Ules[edit]

I discovered that using the console command "startconversation player infogeneral" while targeting Fathis Ules forces him to start a conversation and give you the topics list, even after completing Sins of the Father. Would it be appropriate to put this information on the page? Menry (talk) 20:44, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
