Bug?[edit]

there is a glitch where the gates do NOT open, remember you cannot leave, so the quest cannot be completed and your stuck in the realm, so make sure to save before going in.

This note was added to the article; I moved it here. Can anyone provide more details on this bug? For example, what actions trigger the bug, what to do or what not to do? Given that nobody has posted anything about this before, I doubt this is a really common problem, so it's not clear that an uninformative warning is appropriate. --Nephele 02:11, 30 March 2007 (EDT)

This just happened to me. For some reason, although the first three gates opened fine, the fourth gate wouldn't open. I was able to work around it by equipping the Ring of Happiness, for water-walking, and going around the gates, over the lava. I'm not sure what triggered it, but I'm on the Xbox 360, running v.1.2. I have a feeling it might have been triggered by my looting the corpses the instant I killed them, but that's only because the last champion dropped his Daedric Bow on the ground and it disappeared while I was looting his arrows. Having got round the last gate, everything played out as expected. 82.35.199.228 16:37, 4 May 2007 (EDT)

I just had major problems with this quest, and ended up having to console my way past it. After I opened my cage and started heading for the first set of doors, Boethia announced the death of several of the opponents; most of the doors wouldn't open, and the few that did, I couldn't find my opponents. I tried jumping around the gates that wouldn't open (using a ring of water walking, as suggested above), but that didn't help; after doing a full circuit and seeing no one, I tried again. And again. Twice I actually found one of the Chosen, who were non-hostile, though killing them didn't count as murder. I'm playing a Breton, with no custom race mods. I tried disabling all of my mods, but the quest still didn't work. Only other thing I can think of to try would be a clean install. Very frustrating. Eventually used the console to set the stage to 30 rather than entering the portal. 71.80.42.251 06:32, 20 May 2007 (EDT)
I noticed that when I first entered the portal earlier, all the combatants were standing around on the edges of the little island below the cage I start in. I could jump down and chat with them, and they weren't aggressive, but attacking and killing them would still prompt Boethia's commentary, so I might have been able to finish the quest that way - but I reloaded an earlier save instead and the quest worked normally the second time I entered the portal. I'm guessing this isn't specifically what happens with everyone, since I think it's pretty noticeable when everyone's standing around the start point (and nobody's mentioned that yet), but something similar might be happening. 76.182.218.165 04:40, 30 October 2007 (EDT)
I had the same problems as those above, where the competitors were all hanging around my starting island (and usually a couple of them were in spots where they would slide off into the lava and die). Same as the above posters, I tried to disable my custom race mod (in this case...TNR ALL RACES FINAL.esp by Veritas_Secreto - a highly recommended mod). I found that by disabling that mod, and trying to reenter the portal, I kept having the same problem. What fixed the problem: disabling the race mod, and going to an old save from before I talked to Boethia in the first place. It might be worth mentioning that yesterday I had another quest bug on me: WHODUNIT? in the Dark Brotherhood series, another quest that features a big cast of characters created for the quest. I wonder if the two problems are related...--T87 13:27, 22 November 2007 (EST)
I also had the problem where all opponents were located around the starting island. No custom race mods were used before or during this quest. Reloading an earlier save did not fix the problem - the second time I attempted this quest they were still on the starting island. I won't complain too much though, as pushing the competitors into the lava was a quick and easy way to loot them all without them using up the valuable arrows and potions!202.7.166.167 08:31, 30 April 2008 (EDT)
Yup, same problem here. Again, no race mods active, although I do have a host of others running. Update: As suggested, loading a pre-speech save sorted it. Well, it was either that or disabling the Natural Environments components, which I happened to do for other reasons. --82.46.229.94 10:41, 10 June 2008 (EDT)

Daedra Hearts- more common from Dremora[edit]

This article states that Daedra Hearts are most commonly from Xivali, well in my experience you will find Daedra Hearts generally from Dremora for the vast majority of the game. It's only near the end at high levels that you face enough Xivali for this statement to be true. In short, this is my justification for changing it. Grandmaster z0b 23:02, 22 April 2007 (EDT)

Eltonbrand[edit]

Is it possible to get the Eltonbrand from the Goldbrand, like it was in Morrowind? 71.116.162.229 14:47, 18 November 2007 (EST)

I'm afraid you can't. Eltonbrand was an easter egg in Morrowind. C_Garrison 14:59, 18 November 2007 (EST)

Getting All the Items Out[edit]

BTW, the Staff of Worms is a great way to get all of the items to the portal at the end of the quest. Once you've killed everyone, place all their items into one of their bodies and reanimate it, having it follow you to the portal. Once it dies next to the portal, grab the items and go through the portal, then simply drop what you can't carry and come back and pick it up later.— Unsigned comment by 38.100.176.34 (talk)

Screams from the Deep[edit]

Just thought I'd mention a small detail for those who might care or have the sound turned down. If you stand close enough to the lava in front of Boethia's giant Monument you can hear screams and wailing coming from within it(Its not coming from the portal). Perhaps the souls of trapped warriors? Didnt notice this in any other oblivion plane but i thought it was interesting.209.134.75.234 19:15, 26 May 2008 (EDT)DarthShrute

Reflection[edit]

When I did this quest at a ridiculously high level (35 I believe), almost all the enemies had a strong Reflect Spell effect activated the moment I saw them. My enchanted sword's extra shock damage ended up hurting me more than them. Not sure if it's an intentional thing, but it would be a decent idea to bring an unenchanted weapon (or loot one and use it as soon as possible).

I did this quest at level 38 and nobody used any magic at all in any of the battles, enchanted equipment aside. 24.183.1.73 14:29, 20 June 2009 (EDT)
Same thing happened to me. I was using the Ebony Blade and I ended up being silenced for pretty much most of every fight. I did this on level 23. 173.49.137.131 02:57, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
since when was 35 a ridiculously high level?--VergilSparda 22:40, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, considering most items finish leveling at 23 and you can do all Daedric quests by level 20, waiting until Lv 35 make it rather difficult (you and your enemies continue to level while your equipment does not). –Elliot talk 22:43, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
At high levels, they spawn with high-quality potions and poisons. This is where they are getting the reflect spell and other observed effects. I found this out by paralyzing the Chosen before they could use their potions. I did the quest at Level 46. The Imperial had 96 Strong Restore Health potions, and the Khajiit had a Strong Potion of Reflection (30% Reflect Spell for 50 seconds.) 66.32.4.16 04:26, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Map Marker[edit]

I read both books, I talked to both women, and neither gave me a map marker for Boethia's shrine. What gives?— Unsigned comment by 24.7.247.203 (talk) at 08:25 on 7 August 2009

the copy of the refugees in first edition doesn't work you need to read martins copy at cloud ruler— Unsigned comment by 81.141.178.80 (talk) at 18:00 on 28 September 2009

I read both books (Martin's copy of Refugees and Modern Heretics in the Mystic Library and talked to both women - but no new dialogue options! I already know where it is, but I don't like that the game glitched on the dialogue. Skober 05:07, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Stealth Issues[edit]

It seems natural that playing an Assassin, I'd lurk around invisibly and wait for an opportunity to shoot the opponents of the tournament in the back. Problem is, they seem to do one of two things: Either they track down my character even when invisible and end up just standing in front of him... or as the gates open, they charge off the side into the lava, run under the bridge and die there (losing all their items in the process). Isn't there any way to get them to behave normally and non-suicidally while still stealthed? ~ SotiCoto 12:49, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

you could use chameleon and paralyze them, then attack them normally Agente00cuyo 13:29, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Gray Cowl[edit]

I wore the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal through this quest, and all of the enemies except for the Orc greeted me with "As I live and breathe! The Gray Fox! It's an honor." None of those enemies turned hostile until I went behind them for a nice, free sneak attack, which killed some of them immediately and reduced all the others to a few quick slashes worth of HP.

Is this always the case when one wears the Gray Cowl for this quest? It's really useful, if so. Shashakiro 04:52, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I suspect it would be, though why the Orc had a different greeting, I'm not sure. But generally speaking, those with a Responsibility of less than 50 will respond favorably to someone wearing the Gray Cowl, and the Responsibility of everyone in Boethia's plane is 0. —Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 21:18, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Console command to redo the quest?[edit]

Is it possible to reenter Boethia's realm and fight the opponents anew? All my prized arrows retrieved from Boethia's quest had gone after I put them in a respawning container. I desperately want them back and wouldn't hesitate to fight Boethia's chosen ones once again. 88.222.53.221 20:46, 15 January 2010 (UTC) BowieStation

Nope it's not possible to redo the quest if you have finished it. I'm not sure if there's a command to teleport you back to Boethia's plane, but you can make Azura's quest too. The archer in the cave also has a few enchanted arrows at high levels. --S'drassa T2M 04:09, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

weird[edit]

When i went to do this quest for the fourth time with a lvl 40 something very strange happened. everything was going ok but when i entered the portal it looked as though i had night eye on. I then checked my iventory and not only did i not have it on i had no spells or items which had night eye as one of there effects. to make things weirder the lava was a normal color. other than that the quest went fine. can someone please canfirm this or tell me what the problem is. Kingbaby 23:04, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

A minor graphical bug, or it was a problem with your tv. YOBLIVIO 3rd May 2011 19:15
P.s. My tilde key isn't working, so I'll just sign it myself.

Rare Bug[edit]

(moved from the article)
  • There is a rare bug that puts all of the races around the cage you teleport to, standing still. The cage will open, and you can fight them all or let them fight each other, they could eventually go in to the lava. This makes the quest easy, as you can do area of effect spells, frenzy spells, or just let them fight each other. It is unknown how the bug happens, but the quest is MUCH easier once it happens.
This is pretty clearly either a one-off or a mod-caused bug. It's not something that happens in the standard game. rpeh •TCE 22:00, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Easter Egg[edit]

Shouldn't the Easter Egg of Boethia quoting Hamlet (and Churchill) be listed on this page. It is listed on the Easter Eggs page, and since this is the quest where the Easter Egg happens it should be noted here too. 68.71.14.115 04:37, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Another One Bites the Dust[edit]

This isn't a reference to Queen. The phrase was around long before Queen used it. I can't find my copy of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, but I'd guess it dates back to the Wild West. rpeh •TCE 17:37, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

The phrase is considerably older than the Wild West. It goes back to at least the early 18th century in English, and there are similar expressions which are possible ancestors both in the Bible and in Homer, where it is phrased "lick the dust and bite the ground." 174.6.51.17 22:20, 28 January 2013 (GMT)

Moved note[edit]

  • Most of the leveled lists containing enchanted items that the Chosen are equipped with top out at level 22. If you want a chance at the best loot, you may consider waiting until you reach level 22 to enter Boethia's realm.

The usefulness of this is arguable as you can't travel back to Cyrodiil while doing the quest. --AKB Talk 04:40, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Add a section for "Ten Bloods" Boethia dialogue?[edit]

Or monologue, rather, since there's no second person talking to him, making it a dialogue. Anyway, since the things he says to you upon entering the Ten Bloods tournament differs depending upon your race, and since you won't face an opponent of the same race as yourself, could someone compile all the things said by Boethia during the Ten Bloods event? This includes: Entrance dialogue, dialogue introducing you to your next (or first) opponent, and dialogue commenting on your defeat of said opponent. Predcon 04:25, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Race[edit]

Considering that all the competitors are each of a different race, the pc's race is excluded as he is "representing" his own race, Boethiah's race specific introductions for each competitor, and the tournament's very name, I think its safe to assume that the purpose of it has something to do with its pitting of all of Tamriel's major races against each other. Why exactly, I don't know. Perhaps Boethiah enjoys watching racial tensions expressed on the battlefield. My point being; I think something about the racial aspect should be mentioned--TheLastSwordSinger 02:54, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't think that it should really be mentioned. But that is me. JackTurbo95 12:31, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Speculation should be avoided unless glaringly obvious. Legoless 14:37, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Getting the most bang for your Boethia buck[edit]

This isn't particularly important, and may be painfully obvious to the seasoned veteran, but I hope the info might be useful to a new player.

This quest offers a ton of bonus loot, (well, half a ton, actually), including enchanted weapons and armour. It'd be a shame to have to leave any of it behind because of Encumbrance limitations, or because your foe wound up taking a lava bath. I came out of there with over 1,000 pounds of stuff, including potions and Oblivion alchemical ingredients.

Firstly, I prefer to collect undamaged weapons and armour in their basic natural state, at 100 health. (I've read info on this Wiki that hoarding improved items, at 125 health, can cause safe storage glitches when the items are transferred into a container.) So, to play it safe, it's probably best to collect weapons and armour at 100 health. Destructive spells are the answer. Just equip an enchanted item that fortifies your Speed, and you'll easily stay ahead of the combatants. Their weapons will be undamaged if they don't land a strike on you, and pummelling them with Destruction spells doesn't damage their armour, as long as you stay away from Corrode Armour/Weapons effects. Fire and Shock spells seem to do the job just fine. The basic strategy is to put some distance between you and the foe, turn around and zap them a few times, then run away again and repeat the process. Foes will follow you into battle zones you've previously opened, and the flat bridges between zones make convenient straight shooting galleries to target opponents and unleash a barrage of spells against. When you've convinced them to die, you'll have a hockey bag full of pristine weapons and armour available to you. The only exception will be Bows, if the fighter shot any Arrows at you, but hey, you can't have everything. However, you might increase your chances of keeping a Marksman from shooting at you by using a Chameleon enchantment.

Secondly, try not to french-fry your opponents by sending them into the lava; recovering their loot might be treacherous, if not impossible, depending on their distance from shore. My Redguard opponent always stayed behind his gate and allowed himself to be swept into the lava as the doors opened, no matter how many times I reloaded his portion of the battle, and no matter how long I waited before I triggered his battle, in the hope that he would move to a different location. (I did a separate Save after slaying each opponent, but before triggering the gates for the next one.) Fortuneately, he was close enough to shore so that I could safely loot him, but he had dropped his Glass Mace and Elven Shield. By equipping an enchanted item that fortified my Speed and by using my strongest Fortify Health potion, I was able to dive under the lava and retrieve the dropped items and make it back to shore safely. (Just be sure to Save before wading into the lava, just in case things don't work out for you. You can reload, adjust your strategy, and try again.)

Finally, after you've killed every opponent, you can loot each dead foe and schlepp their stuff to the Return Portal, one at a time, or you can loot each one after each individual death and transfer the loot to one of the hanging corpses if you prefer returning to a single location and having everything in one spot when it's time to leave. Obviously, you need to pile everything around the Return Portal, pick it all up (becoming over-encumbered in the process), and then activate the Portal. It's a good idea here to cast your best Feather Spell on yourself and carry as much stuff as you can while you're arranging the remaining loot around the Portal. (I mean an actual Feather Spell, not a Scroll or Potion. You might wind up spending a bit of time arranging your loot on the ground. You can always re-cast the Spell as needed.) Pick up the lighter stuff first, like the Arrow Quivers, Potions, and ingredients. You can carry more of these individual items, and the less clutter on the ground before you become over-encumbered, the better. Once you move into the exact spot where you're going to pick up the remaining loot and activate the Portal, do a look-around and make sure you can reach the furthest items and that you are close enough to the Portal to activate it. If anything's out of your reach, reposition it and check again before you over-encumber yourself. You can place things on the opposite side of the Portal and still Grab them through the curtain of blue light, but it seems as if your reach distance is shortened somewhat when doing so.76.11.83.251 22:37, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Boethia's Chosen AI[edit]

More of a general comment about NPC AI, I guess, but in looting the corpse of one who has been exacting 2-3 blows a second of high damage from his mace of woe... to find 23 unused strong healing potions on the corpse discomforting, but reassuring in the knowledge that if the NPC AI was improved (Maskars Overhaul anyone?), the quest would cost more in time, and in septims.--Lmstearn (talk) 13:25, 4 July 2014 (GMT)

I believe NPCs have a delay in using potions. If your weapon was weaker, they may have a chance to heal continuously. —Legoless (talk) 14:37, 4 July 2014 (GMT)
