Key[edit]

Hi, I entered the Wellspring Cave and did find the key, killed two of Necromancers that were there near the body and proceeded into the main section where I ended up falling into the water (off the bridge accross the water) so I went back to a save that I had after killing the first two. There were two more in the main section that I killed. At that point I looked for another exit and did not find one. I thought I had to swim out and tried that but that turns out to simply be a loop so that if you fall off the bridge you can swim around to a ramp on the other side to get out. For the record I am not in the apprentice mages outfit, I have on chainmail armor. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. Just to be clear I did get sent on this quest by Raminus Polus after completing the mage quests to the apprentice level.

It should also be mentioned in the Detailed Walkthrough that I beleive that the final chest and the other Necromancers and Eletta are on an island? that is somehow reached through the exit that you need the key for. I found a reference to this on another site but no mention of how to get to it. I also found some info that said there was a graveyard outside and behind the cave and that is where the grove of trees are to be found but this doesn't seem to be true either.

At this point I am wondering if I have discovered a glitch in the storyline. I will be trying again tonight to find a second exit (other then the main door that you come in), but to the best of my memory I have only found 4 Necromancers in the cave, one of which had some good stuff on it. There were two near the entrance and two in the main body of the cave. I did leave the cave after the first two and then came back and oddly the body of the first one i killed was missing i think. Maybe I have to start all over again?

There is a tab in the quest section that serves as a map for dungeons and cities. Its the first tab in the quest setion. — Unsigned comment by 189.160.52.103 (talk) at 19:57 on 21 December 2006 (UTC)

More on the cave[edit]

Ok I found out the error of my ways. Hmm. Some how I just didn't see the tunnel to the left on the other side of the bridge that leads out to the rear entrance. And that is where the other two necromancers were plus some more outside.

SirKnite moving on. — Unsigned comment by SirKnite (talkcontribs) at 17:38 on 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Other Staves[edit]

If you steal or buy a staff after this quest has started, the quest will be marked as completed and you will not be able to make your own. In addition, Rominus will not be able to give you your next task.

I've moved this note here from the main article, because I can't really figure it out. If you were to somehow steal one of the low-level reward staves from this quest before the quest finished, yes, this would probably happen. Several of the low-level reward staves have an associated script (MG08StaffScript) that updates this quest to stage 100 when it is picked up. But there isn't really any way to steal the quest's reward staff, short of using console commands to cheat and give yourself one (which then does not qualify as a glitch). And stealing or buying any of the hundreds of other staves in the game should have absolutely no effect on this quest. Standard staves have no attached script, so there is no way for anything unusual to happen when you acquire one.

If anyone has any examples of this actually happening while playing, it would be useful to know the exact details to figure out what happened in that one case, and then decide whether it could happen in any other cases. For example, what staff specifically did you acquire, and how? What was the quest update message that appeared when you got the staff? Where were you in the quest at the time? --NepheleTalk 13:45, 7 July 2007 (EDT)

I'm having trouble too[edit]

Same with me, although I am playing on the PS3. I killed everyone and grabbed the staff and went back but he keeps telling me to go get a staff. I noticed one of the necromancers is unaccounted for (there were usually 3 but the one time I was successful in killing them there were only two) so I suppose this is contributing to the fact I can't finish the quest. --BluecatTalk 16:43, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

It might be worth trying to put the staff back in the chest, walk around for a moment then take it out again. Maybe that will force the necessary update. --RpehTalk 02:59, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
After you kill all the necromancers at the grove(you don't have to kill the ones in the cave) you will get an update saying you can now take your staff to the university. There's a chance that one of the necromancers may have either entered the cave or moved far away from you that they lost track of you. --Sundaroct131088 05:37, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
Hi, this is the original poster again. Guess what? I wandered around forever and the third necromancer never showed. So I moved on and bought the manor in Anvil and was exploring it when the final necromancer showed up in my living room (!!) and she gave me her 'another plaything' speech. I killed her and lo and behold, I was able to finish the quest. Now I have a dead body in my living room... weird huh? --BluecatTalk

Staff[edit]

So can you take this unfinished staff and enchant it yourself with a soul gem or Azura's star at the enchanting altar? — Unsigned comment by 82.94.28.230 (talk) at 12:35 on 23 May 2008 (UTC)

No, it is labeled as a miscellaneous item. Not a weapon or apparel witch are the only enchant-able things.--Corevette789 22:59, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Staff Upgrading[edit]

I am wondering that if you get the staff at say level 13, will it upgrade to have level 15 stats when you reach 15? — Unsigned comment by 219.90.207.37 (talk) on 15 September 2008

Nope. No leveled items upgrade themselves as you level, with the exception of the armor from the Knights of the Nine - and even that doesn't happen until you put it back on its stand. –RpehTCE 10:11, 15 September 2008 (EDT)

Missing staff[edit]

I completed the mission on ps3 but could'nt find my paralyze staff in my inventory. — Unsigned comment by 71.230.63.124 (talk) on 29 June 2009

Are you sure the quest is finished? You can check whether Raminus Polus will give you the next quest. --Timenn < talk > 08:32, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Staff Leveling[edit]

If you choose your staff at level 14, but do not pick it up until you have reached level 15 (it is not in the cupboard until you specifically talk to Rominus to pick it up), will the staff be leveled for level 14 or 15?— Unsigned comment by 150.201.110.75 (talk) on 21 January 2010

The staff you collect will be the lvl 15 version, even if you handed it over at lvl 14 (or even at lvl 1 for that matter) as long as you are over lvl 15 when you collect it.— Unsigned comment by Masterlocksmith (talkcontribs) on 22 January 2010

Upgrading later[edit]

hey i was just wondering if once you have recieved the staff is there any way to upgrade it such as pay someone to level it up or something like that? — Unsigned comment by 97.93.225.190 (talk) at 16:42 on 9 August 2012 (UTC)

No.--Skyrimplayer 17:30, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Quest Already Complete?[edit]

For some reason this test is already complete in my journal. Probably from a mod... I recall some of the added NPCs had "A Mage's Staff Of..." staffs. I did all the recommendation quests and tried to get access to the arcane university, but Raminus Polus just says he has a new task for me and won't let me join. Console codes won't work because the gates stay locked. I don't have any saves from before it was complete. Is there a way for me to continue the mages guild questline? 99.254.83.151 03:20, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

If Raminus has a new task for you, then try doing the quest and then talk to him again. Otherwise, try de-activating the mod or simply use console commands to give yourself the next quest. To gain access to the University enter the Lobby and unlock the doors via the console. --SerCenKing Talk 15:58, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Well, he says he has a new task for me, but only in the greeting -- There's no dialogue option for it. I'll try giving myself the next quest and unlocking the doors using the console. Thanks! 99.254.83.151 07:11, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Water[edit]

I cant get out of the water in the cave X_X75.85.240.138 18:43, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Try the Wellspring Cave article. If you need more help, that article's talk page would be a more appropriate location. --GKtalk2me 20:43, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Verification Needed[edit]

  • After you have your chat with Noveni Othran the invisible barrier is removed.

I just removed this from the article because it doesn't happen at my game. I remember clearly one time that I jumped off the island during the fight and the necromancers followed me. After I killed them, I couldn't get back in the island. To test it, I boosted my Acrobatics to 255 with the console and I still couldn't get on the island. Can anybody confirm? --Rigas Papadopoulos • TalkDeeds 09:52, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

It's true - and your description is proof of it. The barriers are two-way so if they weren't disabled you wouldn't have been able to jump off the island in the first place. Actually, to be really accurate the barrier is removed as soon as you get within 800 units of Noveni, which is obviously before she speaks to you. rpeh •TCE 10:26, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Can't find Eletta[edit]

I exited the cave and defeated the necromancers, and have searched around but cannot find a dead Eletta on top of the island. Where is she? --82.31.164.172 16:31, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

In fact I can't recall ever seeing Eletta being killed. To confirm, I reloaded a save just before I initially exited the cave. Upon exiting the cave, there was indeed no scene of the necromancers killing Eletta. The necromancers just headed straight for me. Should I assume this is a glitch? --82.31.164.172 16:42, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Grove battle[edit]

Noveni will not attack until she recites her lines, which she will only do once close to you - avoiding her while you fight the other 2 necromancers will improve your odds of survival and allow you to face her 1-on-1 after her cohorts are defeated. 76.185.41.201 03:43, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Bug?[edit]

Bug?? that I just encountered: I visited the cave long before the quest started (actually I like visiting and I saw ~1/2 of the caves and other interesting places before doing 20 quests ...) and there was no sign of Zahrasha and Eletta, only some necros quickly killed. At one point in time I acquired the metallic parts for ... I can't remember its name and, at a much later moment I joined the guild. After collecting all recommendations and being admitted into the guild, somehow the quest started without noticing me about the cave and now the only dialog with Raminus is about finishing the mage's staff. So ... after reading uesp I went again to the cave (my character is now level 42) where there were 3 necros and still no sign of the mages, dead or alive. I killed the necros and by console I got the key to the isle where I found the mages alive and ... waiting. No useful dialog, no staff, no dead people, no necros (so nobody to kill). I left them alive on the island, I added the unfinished staff by console, I tried to speak to Raminus (no useful dialog), I went to Delmar (no useful dialog), I changed the quest stages by console, and nothing works greater than stage 50 (all stages manually changed). Apparently, I am blocked at stage 100 (manually changed) with no possibility to get a staff from Delmar, to speak to Raminus that only knows 1 thing - I have a staff to finish -, or get a new Mages Guild quest from anyone.

- - Someone has any idea on how to move forward, or I have to abandon the Mages Guild line of quests?

- PS: now I realize that my character does not wear the apprentice's robe (that I don't remember where is left or sold), but I cannot imagine this might be the cause. — Unsigned comment by 31.14.220.8 (talk) at 20:26 on 7 May 2013

Quest does not Complete if You Kill Noveni Othran Before She Speaks[edit]

If you kill Noveni Othran before she gets a chance to speak to you, then the quest does not complete after all the necromancers are killed. Instead, if you take the unfinished staff and head back to the Mages College, they'll just tell you that you should be getting a staff.

The solution I found was, after killing all the necromancers, click on "wait" and give it a couple of hours. When the wait is over, Noveni Othran rises from the dead, gives her speech, and you need to kill her all over again. But then the quest completes.
