Accuracy[edit]

Although the game text says otherwise, Elemental Shields don't actually seem to affect AR at all. They just provide resistance and hurt nearby opponents.

Does it mean that walking around in a town with, say Fire Shield 50pts on Self will hurt the townsmen and make them attack you? 88.222.53.221 10:31, 2 July 2009 (UTC) YoursTrully

No, it only hurts them when they attack you. --Gaebrial 10:34, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
The lack of an AR boost catches Oblivion players by surprise; it may be worth mentioning on the pages for these three shields. Tlist 19:09, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Proximity?[edit]

Can anybody confirm that the elemental shields damage people/creatures simply standing nearby? I always thought damage was only inflicted if they attacked you - maybe even only if they hit you. --Gaebrial 03:31, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

Calculation[edit]

When taking fire damage with Fire Shield active, is there maybe a default minimum of 1 point reduction in damage, regardless of the damage dealt and strength of your shield? I'm wondering if the net total is rounded up or down, and whether it's really worth bothering to shield yourself with fewer than 10 points (or even at all against lesser fire-using opponents. . .example: will a 5 point Fire Shield make *any* difference against a Shalk doing 3-6 fire damage?) Thanks

Reflect and low magnitudes[edit]

Two questions. If I have Fire Shield 5 pts, does an enemy attacking me take 0 damage? Or do they take a minimum 1 damage? Secondly, if the enemy has 100% Reflect, do they take the damage or do I? That is, does the elemental damage from the elemental shield reflect back at me, or punch through reflects? Hlaalu Helseth assassination attempt going on, if you couldn't tell. 216.82.142.13 21:33, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

The elemental shield's damage doesn't reflect since it's the enemy doing it to itself via reaching through the shield to hit you. I have no idea how the damage turns out. I'd assume that it might do a minimum of 1 but with high enough ar sometimes mud crabs or fish hit for less then 1 which fails to adjust health bar status. So it may be possible that it would hit for only half a point.
Update on this a test with a spell involving magnitude 1 in all 3 shields showed barely any effect on a scrib but a test with a 10 magnitude fireshield showed what appeared to be 1 damage per hit from the shield.

Damage[edit]

This may be a bug but I've never yet seen an enemy take damage from the elemental shield effects. Tested with >1000 fire shield, frost shield and lightning shield potions on xbox GOTY.88.111.185.59 01:44, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm almost positive it does something in the damage department, though i'm skeptical of "1 point elemental damage per 10 points spell strength," i have seen an enemies health bar deplete without me attacking while having 100 percent of all elemental shields, though at a minimal rate. Abused the alchemy and made 10 potions of 222 fire + frost shield. The combined effect of damage without resistances should be 10/10*222*2=444 damage according to
formula 10 pts = 1 dmg. Went to the streets and redoran guards killed themselves in 1 hit. This makes it clear that the damage is at least as big as the page says: dunmer
redoran guard damage should have received 276.4 dmg (75% resistance to fire). Also, two additional things pop up:
  • 1: Is the damage affected by resistance?
  • 2: Since the difficulty slider is always set to max in my TES games, it is safe to assume that NPC's do damage to themselves, otherwise the guard would survive at least one hit, having 205 HP. This can be added to the article by some good wiki patroller, I think. 194.33.119.1 16:22, 23 April 2015 (GMT) ZLOJ

For me its same too, The elemental shield is not working like it says it is not doing any damage to enemies,i tired it on rats, npc and guards. i used some superstrong potions with alchemy around 2k>firedamage and attacked redoran guards, nothing happened.there were 4-5 guards attacking me. Also i'm experienecing a weird glitch for sometime, when i cast any shield barrier spell my armor rating doesn't increase unless i open my inventory and move any item in the inventory. Also the increased armor rating stays even after the spell wears off unless i do the above same thing, moving any item in inventory.I crated a new character with breton and tested it with dragon skin its not happening in there.so may be my save game is screwed.

Does this Stack?[edit]

This, and other shield effects provide elemental resistance, but does this stack with the regular Resist Element? For instance, does having 90% Resist Fire and 10 Fire Shield give a character immunity to Fire Damage? Has anyone tested this? Vellup (talk) 01:33, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Tested this out on the latest official GOTY version, no mods or unofficial patches or anything. And I tested with Frost Shield instead, but it probably works the same with other elemental shields/resistances. I cast Resist Frost 90pts. Using the console command player->getresistfrost confirms I have 90 frost resistance. Then I cast Frost Shield 10pts and type the same console command again. The console returns 100, confirming I have 100 frost resistance. Then when an enemy uses frost damage against me, I resist it completely. So, it seems resistances from elemental shields do stack with regular elemental resistances. --Croup shrunk (talk) 16:27, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
