Bug - Can't Start Quest[edit]

Okay I have found a bug with the quest, as we know, to start the quest we must have completed the quest "The Fate of the Skaal", and have overheard two Skaal talking about their missing blacksmith. The problem is Deor Woodcutter will not talk to me at all, therefor preventing me fron starting the quest. Has anyone else had this problem ? And does anyone know how to fix this problem or jump-start the quest another way ?— Unsigned comment by Mog (talkcontribs) at 23:31 on 6 December 2012

I got the quest as a rumor from Galdris Sadri in the Retching Netch in Raven Rock. Try that. Jeancey (talk) 23:35, 6 December 2012 (GMT)
That also didnt work — Unsigned comment by Mog (talkcontribs) at 23:44 on 6 December 2012
Still might not be a bug. There might just be some other quests you have to finish first. Have you cleansed all the all-maker stones? Also try asking around the village. Jeancey (talk) 23:51, 6 December 2012 (GMT)
Yes yes haha I have done every quest in Dragonborn DLC, save this one of course, but still noting sadly — Unsigned comment by Mog (talkcontribs) at 23:55 on 6 December 2012
Every quest? Are you sure? There are a ton. No idea then. Jeancey (talk) 23:57, 6 December 2012 (GMT)
I'll kep searching and see if anyone else is having the problem — Unsigned comment by Mog (talkcontribs) at 00:01 on 7 December 2012
I'm experiencing precisely the same issue. I cannot commence this quest, and so can't forge Stalhrim, in spite of having completed near every other aspect of the Dragonborn DLC. In-fact, Baldor Iron-Shaper isn't missing at all, but at his forge willing to sell me junk. I think it might have something to do with a missing Fanari Strong-Voice, who is no-where in the village, and who's conversation with Deor I don't have the chance to overhear. She -might- have been killed by the Lurker Vindicator who spawned when I cleansed the Wind Stone. If so, I suppose I'm boned... which is really, really, REALLY lame.--Grieves (talk) 19:43, 15 December 2012 (GMT)

() Sup guys I'm having the same problem as Mog. I can talk to Fanari about the disappearance and she says to me i should talk to Deor about the details. Unfortunately I cant engage in a conversation with Deor. I tried to talk to him before cleaning all the stones, after cleaning all of them and after completing the Main Quest, but it wont work. However Fanari and Deor are standing in the town square and staring at each other the whole time, also Baldor is gone (kinda sucks as this prevents one from completing other quests) so the quest is partially triggered. I tried the usuall stuff, like fast travelling to another place and back or simply waiting a couple of hours, but nothing seems to work. I also went to the abandoned lodge to see if the Thalmor are there, but they werent. I hope someone will figure something out, as I doubt this will be patched. and if youre on console you cant use any commands :( — Unsigned comment by Kahei (talkcontribs) at 00:26 on 16 December 2012‎

Hello ive never posted here but i had the same problem and just fixed it now here was my problem the blacksmith was in skaal village, deor wouldnt talk to me, and i couldnt find the skaal chief farini. how it work for me, i went to the tavern in raven rock asked about rumors till i got the one about the blacksmith, i even had to reload the save, but once he told me about the rumor nothing popped up still, so i went back to the village and bam right in front the two people were talking about it blacksmith i hope this happen to you guys and also i typed this real fast with no checks sorry just wanted to help. — Unsigned comment by 76.217.11.95 (talk) at 00:15 on 17 December 2012‎
I am too having an issue. I really don't care for the ability to smith the weapons but I wish to get the achievement. — Unsigned comment by 172.162.1.49 (talk) at 01:22 on 18 December 2012
Mog here, I bring good news, Bethesda is working on this issue, so hopefully its in the next update :) So chill for now ! --Mog — Unsigned comment by Mog (talkcontribs) at 08:26 on 9 January 2013
Found a fix, in my case, Fanari was killed by the lurker. I had to resurrect and enable her using the console, and then teleporting her to the Skaal village. Then I went into an interior cell in another place (like Raven Rock) and then I fast traveled back. When I came back, I found her talking to the woodcutter guy. This should also work for the woodcutter instead of Fanari. If the quest still will not be initiated, it can be done using the console to force the quest to stage 10 (the first one) while in another cell than the Skaal village. The blacksmith will then be transported to the basement, and the quest will progress as normal. Jyggorath (talk) 21:55, 10 February 2013 (GMT)

() In my case both Fanari and Deor were killed/disappeared. After several hours spent to search i finally found a solution on PC :

  • prid xx018FCF
  • moveto player
  • enable
  • resurrect 1

These commands will make come to you fanari regardless here current state

  • prid xx018FA8
  • moveto player
  • enable
  • resurrect 1

These commands will make come to you fanari regardless his current state

Wait them to go to skaal's village, spent 2 days in any others place, come back to the village and these two NPCs will engage the conversation witch permit you to begin the quest. Hope it could help (sorry for my language, i'm french). Littlerogue 19:43, 7 april 2013 (GMT) — Unsigned comment by 92.144.150.86 (talk)

Same as a few others, Fanari will say its no big deal but I can't start a conversation with Doer. I am playing on my XBOX, am I just SOL or is there something I can do? — Unsigned comment by 68.202.2.229 (talk) at 15:09 on 2 July 2013‎

I had a problem where Fanari and Deor would start talking, but their conversation would be interrupted by a third party (a random wolf attacking the village), and afterwards, I could talk to Fanari about a missing person and she would direct me to Deor, but Deor wouldn't talk to me. Coming at the village from the other side to kill the wolf preemptively didn't work, because as soon as one of the Skaal aggroed on it, the whole village, Fanari and Deor included, would follow suit and the conversation would be hopelessly interrupted. Eventually, I grabbed the wolf's RefID, reloaded my last save, and killed it via the console before heading to the village.--68.41.38.202 04:39, 1 January 2020 (GMT)

Persuasion Checks[edit]

It would be worth noting if possible the Speech skill level required for a successful persuasion/intimidation for each option in the dialogue with Ancarion. It's possible the level required to persuade him to leave is not the same as the level required to persuade him to agree to buying stalhrim equipment from you. --Enodoc (talk) 21:16, 28 December 2012 (GMT)

It seems that the persuade and intimidation checks for getting Ancarion to leave are easier to pass than having the ability to sell things to him. At a speech level of 64, with no fortify speech active effects, haggling 4, allure, and merchant (none of which should effect, but for the matter of full disclosure for testing of course), I can pass both checks to get him to leave, but cannot seem to get him to allow me to sell stalhrim to him. 104.175.106.118 17:59, 2 May 2015 (GMT)

Black smithing[edit]

Hello, frist time posting here, saw a bug crop up from completing the dragonborn dlc. recently downloaded it and spent a day completing the main quests and appears that doing so has caused her to no longer be able to smith items, I cannot say for sure if this extends to enchanting and alchemy or any other kind of interaction. Just be wary, complete new dlc side quests completing the main and track any further instances of this bug in comments please. — Unsigned comment by 86.178.206.74 (talk) at 02:27 on 1 January 2013

A lot of players have managed to finish this quest without any smithing issues, so it sounds like this might be something unrelated to this quest altogether, and more than likely a one-off. — ABCface 03:23, 29 January 2013 (GMT)

Can't appear to begin quest[edit]

I have left and returned to the Skaal village to no avail but I think my issue stems from the fact that the blacksmith is not missing and the woodcutter is. I have checked all around and in Boer's house both night and day and he seems to have disappeared. At night, someone called Yrsa is in his house and during the day it's empty. I checked near the Wind Stone to make sure he wasn't killed and there is no body, plus I remember being quick to kill the Lurker as I did those quests at Level 67.

Anybody have any ideas? Syko Conor (talk) 00:12, 7 February 2013 (GMT)

Just so we know what state you're at, have you completed the Dragonborn main quest? Yrsa is Deor's wife and is usually busy building the Temple of Miraak. Deor is marked Protected and therefore can't usually be killed by enemies (unless you kill him yourself when his health is low). Are you currently doing any other Skaal Village quests? You may need to complete those first. Personally, I had completed Fanari's favour (to kill the reaver leader) before I got this quest. --Enodoc (talk) 11:45, 7 February 2013 (GMT)
I have completed the main questline of Dragonborn and the majority of the sidequests available on Solthseim. I have definitely done that favour for Fanari and am considered 'Skaal-friend', most villagers address me as such (though one or two appear hostile and refuse to accept that status). Syko Conor (talk) 21:33, 7 February 2013 (GMT)
EDIT: I just approached Yrsa in the Skaal village as I was walking around trying to find any and all sidequests to do and she said 'You. Every time I see you my blood boils.' further prompts illicit normal Skaal responses until she runs out and starts the generic 'Hmm?' 'Did you need something?' etc but every time I leave and return the first thing she says is her blood boils. Does this mean I have done something bad to her, i.e. killing Deor? This worked for me: Setstage DLC2SV02 1

Does anyone know if you could fix this[edit]

I don't have my old saves so i can't reload. In my game the wood guy died during the "cleansing of the stones" and i can't advance using set stage commands.I can't even resurrect the guy because he is long dead (the commands only make a glitched clone of him which btw BECOMES ESSENTIAL AND CAN'T DIE UNLIKE THE ORIGINAL THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN).Using the command completestage is the only one that works but it still doesn't allow me to craft stalhrim armor or get the following quest.EDIT:I've seen a response to the first topic and looking around i found that you need to resurrect the original deor with prid <refID> resurrect 1.That fixed it for me too. — Unsigned comment by 95.180.16.189 (talk) at 22:38 on 10 February 2013

Not Essential[edit]

Neither Fanari or Deor is essential, only protected. This should mean that they won't be killed by anyone but the player (enemies ignore protected NPCs when their health drops to a certain level), but this can be hard to avoid, since they will both be around for the fight with the lurker. An other problem worth mentioning is that protected NPCs can get killed by other enemies if the enemy attacks them during the "bleedout stage" (rare, except from area attacks), and the lurkers do have an area attack, which can be quite powerful on higher levels.
A lot of players have problems related to one of them being dead, which causes the quest to never start at all. I think mentioning this in the article would be smart. Jyggorath (talk) 16:34, 18 February 2013 (GMT)

Missing Thalmor at Abandoned Lodge - Bug?[edit]

I was able to get the quest, but when I got to the abandoned lodge, there were only three Thalmor. The one missing is the one with the key to the lodge. Anyone else have this problem? — Unsigned comment by 50.142.176.109 (talk) at 23:23 on 21 March 2013 (GMT)

Unlootable Thalmor[edit]

I've noticed a bug with UDBP 1.0.2. It seems that it will make the four Thalmor soldiers outside the Abandoned Lodge unlootable. What's more, without the key from their bodies, the quest can not be continued. Uninstall the mod will solve this problem. Dreamshadow (talk) 01:47, 24 March 2013 (GMT)

Alternatively, you could bring the console up and type player.additem 04027e00 1, which should give you the key. --184.151.63.184 04:14, 28 March 2013 (GMT)
Thank you~ I've confirmed that this is a bug caused by UDBP. Hopefully, it will be fixed in the next vision. Dreamshadow (talk) 05:20, 28 March 2013 (GMT)
I do not think discussions of the unofficial patches belong here. Further, though I approve of the work done with unofficial patches I personally believe they probably should be avoided by ordinary players until after Bethesda has stopped their patch maintenance, precisely because the unofficial patches might add bugs as well as remove them, and might interfere with later official patches. —MortenOSlash (talk) 07:55, 28 March 2013 (GMT)

glitch[edit]

I've got the same glitch on my 360 I can hear them discuss the missing Smith but can't talk to the woodcutter. It's May 2013 now just when are they going to fix this? — Unsigned comment by 213.106.113.104 (talk) at 21:42 on 17 May 2013 (GMT)

At this point, never, they have stopped all dev on the game DLC and patches; unless the patch is required due to a game breaking bug, that generally doesn't include these fixable ones that you could drop back a save or two and adhere to the main wiki page for the quest. - Killerchronic (talk) 04:24, 10 June 2013 (GMT)

Unable to Finish[edit]

While I had no difficulty in starting this quest, or obtaining the Map, I was unable to complete it. After collecting the map and returning to Skahl Village, Baldor will not speak to me. He is indicated as the quest objective, but he just makes a passing comment about Storn Crag-Strider after the results of the Dragonborn quest-line.

I have tried to use setstage DLC2SV02 to both 40 or 200. 200 will complete the quest techincally, but I am unable to craft Stalhrim weaponry at the forge.... any ideas? — Unsigned comment by 24.68.160.232 (talk) at 17:44 on 8 August 2013

I'm having the same issue, presumably because Storn is dead and I haven't completed the quest to kill Miraak yet. Thing is, I was hoping to have a nice shiny new Stalhrim blade for just that purpose. Does anyone know what exactly has to be done to have the villagers return to normal? For example, I can do the Summit of Apocrypha quest part way and leave before confronting Miraak, or do I now have to kill him to finish this quest? -- Haravikk (talk) 12:35, 29 March 2014 (GMT)
I believe you have to kill Miraak then, yes. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 14:14, 29 March 2014 (GMT)

Fix to start the quest without using console commands.[edit]

So, I really looked forward to forge Stalhrim armor and weapons but I rushed through the main questline and was unable to listen to the villagers. My resolution? Talk to the bartender in the "Retching Netch" and ask about rumors. He told me that "someone went missing in skaal village" so I went up there and checked with the leader Fanari Strong-Voice about it. She told me to go to Deor Woodcutter about that. I asked him about "someone missing" and he told me that the village smith dissapeared and he saw two elven beings move south-west and they dragged something behind them. Please verify if someone else could get this quest this way.

I honestly apologize for any bad english that might have been appeared. 88.72.132.61 21:21, 14 August 2013 (GMT)

can i make stallhrim by getting the ebony smithing perk?[edit]

deor woodcutter died by a bug and wasnt protected therefore making me unable to start the stallhrim source quest, but in a loading screen it says the ebony smithing perk unlocks stallhrim, is this true — Unsigned comment by 195.225.189.9 (talk) on 05:04 October 24, 2013

It does, but you also need to learn the techniques from him. Xolroc (talk) 11:52, 24 October 2013 (GMT)

Can't find Dear Woodcutter![edit]

Guys I just started playing Dragon Born a few weeks ago. I beat the main quest, including The Fate of the Skaal but I can't even find Woodcutter! I found Strong-voice but the other guy isn't in his house or in the village. Help please!] — Unsigned comment by 75.91.38.214 (talk) at 16:06 on 1 March 2014 (GMT)

If the quest arrow doesn't point to the lodge and the smith isn't inside...this happened to me on the 360 version. Go back outside, wait 24 hours than the quest marker should be on the abandoned lodge and the smith is in the basement. — Unsigned comment by 74.102.107.67 (talk) at 07:24 on 26 March 2014 (GMT)

Deor will not talk to me[edit]

Hi I am new and im not really sure how to fix this glitch. However, in my case Fanari is here next to Deor and they just stand there after having their conversation about the blacksmith. And so I walked to them to ask about it and Fanari told me to talk to Deor, but he wont talkmto me. The black smith is missing though. — Unsigned comment by 70.140.118.94 (talk) at 17:24 on 1 June 2014 (GMT)

Won't start[edit]

As a bug report you do not give much to build an entry on page. So you say the blacksmith is not there anymore? Can you be sure he has not died without you seeing it? By the way, do you have any mods or unofficial patches installed that may interfere with the gameplay? —MortenOSlash (talk) 05:46, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Making the Thalmor leave[edit]

If you convince Ancarion to leave Solstheim, are the Thalmor and their ship disabled? Vicano (talk) 23:50, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes, they are. --79.222.134.1 15:23, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

New bug - only three Thalmor soldiers at lodge, none of them have the key[edit]

Obviously this will make the quest impossible to complete unless I figure out a workaround. I'm guessing the one with the key either didn't spawn or spawned in an inaccessible area. --Morrolan (talk) 21:32, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

Hmmm, returning there some time later produced three Thalmor soldiers again, but one of them did have the key this time. I had been away for quite some time ingame, not sure if it was over 30 days; I had definitely been away from Solstheim though. Aren't there normally four soldiers? --Morrolan (talk) 21:35, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
There are indeed meant to be four. We don't have too much info on them though. —Legoless (talk) 23:10, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
